Abstract

The pledge of allegiance is a pivotal concept in Islamic political jurisprudence. Throughout history, it has served as a means of establishing political legitimacy and declaring popular approval of the ruler. Muslim jurists have differed on the position of the pledge of allegiance in the process of appointing an imam or ruler. Their opinions have ranged between those who consider it a foundational pillar without which authority cannot exist, as is the case with most Sunni jurists, and those who view it as a mere confirmation of divine authority or religious text, as is the case with the Imamis. This divergence reveals the depth of the debate over understanding the relationship between the text and consultation, political legitimacy, and popular will. This study examines the most prominent jurisprudential trends in their stance on the pledge of allegiance, analyzing scholarly texts and the positions of various schools, demonstrating how this issue reflects a broader conception of the role of the nation and jurists in constructing and exercising authority within the Islamic framework.
